About YAML / JSON
YAML and JSON both represent structured data, and many tools use one or the other: Kubernetes and CI pipelines lean on YAML, while APIs and JavaScript tooling lean on JSON. Because JSON is largely a subset of YAML, the two convert cleanly for most data.
This tool converts in both directions in your browser. It is convenient for turning an API response into a YAML config, or a YAML file into JSON for a tool that only accepts JSON. YAML-specific features such as comments and anchors have no JSON equivalent, so they are not preserved when converting to JSON.
Common use cases
- Converting a Kubernetes or CI YAML file to JSON for inspection.
- Turning a JSON example into YAML for a configuration file.
- Validating that a YAML document parses to the structure you expect.
- Checking how types such as numbers and booleans are interpreted.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did my comments disappear?
- JSON has no comment syntax, so comments cannot survive a YAML to JSON conversion.
- Why did a value change type?
- YAML infers types from unquoted values, so text like yes, no, or 08 may be read as a boolean or number. Quote such values to keep them as strings.
- Does indentation matter?
- In YAML, yes. Use spaces rather than tabs and keep nesting consistent.
