About Word Counter

Word and character limits show up everywhere: meta descriptions, social posts, essays, commit messages, and form fields. Counting by hand is slow and inaccurate.

Paste or type text and this counter shows the number of words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs, along with an estimated reading time. Counting happens live in your browser and the text is not uploaded. Word boundaries differ between languages, so counts for languages written without spaces are only approximate.

Common use cases

  • Keeping a meta description or title within a length limit.
  • Checking an article or essay against a word count requirement.
  • Estimating how long a piece will take to read.
  • Counting characters for a message with a length cap.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time estimated?
Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed; a separate speaking-time estimate uses 150 words per minute for presentations. Both are approximations.
Do spaces count as characters?
The tool reports character counts so you can compare them with the limit you are working to; check whether your limit includes spaces.
Is my text stored?
No. It stays in your browser tab.
